Abstract

In the mobile telecommunication services, SMS is one of common used service besides the voice. However, SMS has limitations in sending the number of characters in one time delivery (160 characters). The research aims to develop application that is able to reduce the size of an SMS without losing the contained information through compression process. Huffman Code is implemented on this application as a compression method. The RC4 algorithm is also implemented as an encryption method to provide security mechanism during SMS delivery. This application is built on the Android-based smartphone version 2.3.6 (Gingerbread). The obtained results show that application has been successfully developed and named “ZippedSMS”. The following application is also able to perform compression process and result the compression percentage of 29% to 48%. The proposed encryption algorithm also fulfilling the needs for data integrity of transmitted and received SMS.
