Abstract

The street illumination is very important in modern city as the part of city’s infrastructure. However it is very difficult to reduce the energy consumption, increase the lighting rate and reduce the maintenance cost by the existing street lighting in old design. This paper presents the Smart Illumination Control System (SICS) to remote control and smart monitor the street illumination with M2M communication technology. SICS is structured as illumination application layer, controlling layer and data center. SICS uses the interface boards to send and receive command from controlling layer by Narrow Band Power Line Carrier (PLC) communication. The wireless communication is set up to report the status of the controlling layer to the data center. The street lamps can be switched according to the logic connection in the LonWorks network in computer. The performance evaluation of SICS indicates the system reliability is validated by Statistical Process Control (SPC), the 65% energy consumption is reduced, the lighting rate is improved 10.9%, and the 75% on site working hours is reduced. In comparison to the previous publications, this design achieves effective and real-time network with superiority of the energy efficiency.
