Abstract

One of the functions of communication is social communication, in which there is an implicit function of the communication itself is the cultural communication. Cultural communication plays an important role in determining, maintaining, developing, and pass on culture. Same was the case in the Balinese in Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village , District of South Denpasar. Through the process of communication, in the form of a series of ceremonies symbolic activity derived from one generation to the next by the citizens of Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan, has a set of symbols with specific meanings that are still being developed and implemented to date in the New Year Saka. The ceremony include: malasti, nyejer, bhuta yadnya/tawur kesanga, nyepi, ngemb ak geni, and omed-omedan. This study is an ethnographic communication studies research focuses on the meaning of a series of ceremonies welcomes the Saka New Year (Nyepi) on the Balinese in Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village, District of South Denpasar. The purpose of this study was to: (1) Knowing the meaning of the communication situation in a series of ceremonies to welcome the New Year in the Balinese Saka by Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village; (2) Knowing the meaning of the communication events in a series of ceremonies to welcome the New Year in the Balinese Saka by Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village; (3) Know the meaning of acts of communication in a series of ceremonies to welcome the New Year in the Balinese Saka by Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village. This research is a qualitative interpretive paradigm. The theory behind this research is Symbolic Interaction. Data was collected by indepth interviews and nonparticipant observation, and other reference documents. The results of the study refers to the understanding of the Balinese in Banjar Kaja, Pakraman Sesetan Village, the meanings of the Saka New Year.
