Abstract

"Basuki Resobowo on Film, Arts, and Theatre" In Indonesian art history, Basuki Resobowo (1916–99) is rarely written about. His ideas on art and activism are less popular than those of S. Sudjojono, Hendra Gunawan or Affandi. However, Basuki was much involved in the art, film, theatre and literary scene in Indonesia. He acted in Kedok Ketawa (Jo An Djan, 1940); was involved in the visual department of Keimin Bunka Shidoso; joined Perfini as artistic director and scriptwriter; and was appointed as head of the visual arts department in LEKRA (Lembaga Kebudajaan Rakjat, Institute for the People's Culture). This research will target Basuki's ideas on art, film and other media. How are his ideas affecting dynamic aspects of visual culture in Indonesia? What can we learn from Basuki Resobowo's ideas?
