Abstract

Joining a new institution during the 2021/2022 period could be challenging, as that's around the time when we start to re-adjust after the Covid-19 pandemic to the new normal phase. Three newly graduated librarians were hired during that period with nearly zero experience in higher education libraries. They were then put through a series of weekly training sessions on different divisions, to help them understand the principles, business flow and best practices in respective sections. After a month, they were then paired with their actual coworker to discuss the upcoming plans, before finally assigned to perform an actual job. Uniquely, even though most trainings were conducted hybrid, the mentors claimed that the newcomers are pretty good in their appointed station, and can interchangeably perform in other divisions. Triggered by the excellent training result despite being conducted during and post Covid-19, this paper will adopt a qualitative approach with ethnographic methodology, aiming to deliver data rich in description. While we might assume that PowerPoints or public speaking as determining factors, the study revealed that the staff's interpersonal skills is the key factor for the smooth OJT implementation. It is verified that there are six enablers - including organizational culture, the force to interact during Covid-19, personnel’s characters, willingness to learn, common threads, and awareness to interact - which respectively contribute to support the interpersonal approach. Simple interactions such as small talk, usage of slang, having lunch together, jokes in meetings, expression of solidarity, and involvement in events have proven to be beneficial for the adjustment. Due to the accepting environment, some results have been felt after the training, including the generation of new ideas, speed up the working process, make work interchangeable, and increase attachment and job satisfaction.
