Abstract

An entertaining film is often associated with comedy film, and comedy is often related to animation because of animation’s nature that can always defy the law of reality. But making an animated film with a comedy in it does not guarantee the film to be an entertaining one. It needs a solid preparation beforehand for the comedy to be able to be delivered to the audience. Animation, as a visual storytelling medium, depends heavily on storyboards as the first visual blueprint of the film. Through storyboarding, shots are designed. Shots design is important as every emotion needs a different treatment on the shot. A funny moment should be designed with a different shot than a dramatic moment, and so applied to any other emotions. In comedy shots, the essential components are clarity, staging, and timing. Writer believe that by studying the theories of comedy and applying it in the shots designs, film makers could at least increase the chance of the audience to laugh at the right moment, thus creating an entertaining film.
