Abstract

This research aims to create a mobile application that is able to help women aged 20 – 39 who live in the capital cities of Indonesia to develop a habit of doing breast self-examinations routinely as recommended by doctors. By building a routine of doing breast self-examinations, women are able to greatly reduce their risk of late breast cancer detection. This application is developed Human-Centred Design method in order to create an end product that considers the needs and wants of its target audience. Data collection is conducted through mixed method data collection. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered to ensure a well-rounded data collection process. Quantitative data was collected through an online questionnaire. It was found that the main reason younger women do not practice breast self-examinations is because they do not know the steps to breast self-examinations and often forget to do it as often as recommended. Thus, an interactive media is needed that can engage and teach in the women’s daily lives. Qualitative data was collected through an interview, observation and focus group discussion. Through this, the author discovered that features that could help women practice self-examination routinely is an application with a predictive reminder for self-examinations, guide in how to do breast self-examinations, as well as a symptom-tracker.
